Selva Negra
Selva Negra Eco Lodge and Coffee Estate is a multiphaceted estate with the eco lodge as the primary tourism destination. The coffee estate exports organic and sustainable coffee, and they have a world-class sustainable farm. It's a nature lover's destination, a pristine rainforest with wonderful wildlife spotting including our impressive list of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.
You can hike or horseride around the estate. Also available are tours of the coffee farm and the onsite coffee museum. It is a prime location for bird watching. Included is a stop at the lakeside restaurant for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a slice of delicious cake.
El Castillo del Cacao
We are taken through the process of chocolate production, from the roasting of beans to the packaging of bars. The small factory is shaped like an oversized mini-golf castle. In the chocolate molding and packaging room, visitors have the opportunity to taste the latest confections, all of which are made of at least 50% pure cocoa.
Coffee Museum
The museum has a varied exhibition, not only including information about coffee but also about other aspects of the department. Visitors can learn more about the history of coffee in Matagalpa, as well as the way coffee is grown, harvested, and processed. There are also some tools and old machinery on display. Pictures of the first coffee growers that came to Matagalpa from other countries are also exhibited. The coffee museum also has a collection of pre-Columbian artifacts that were found in the region and there is also a photo gallery with old photos of the city.
